Whole Body Cryotherapy

WHAT IS WHOLE BODY CRYOTHERAPY (WBC)?:

Whole Body Cryotherapy (WBC) is a sophisticated method of cold therapy involving three minutes of skin exposure to temperatures between -200°F to -250°F.

While this modality was first utilized in Japan in 1978 to treat rheumatic diseases, studies conducted over the last two decades have established cryotherapy as a powerful therapy for reducing symptoms of pain and inflammation associated with a number of chronic conditions. Further more, cryotherapy significantly improves recovery time for athletes, treats skin conditions, and aids in weight loss.

 

HOW DOES WBC WORK?:

The sympathetic nervous system is stimulated by the skin’s cold receptors, causing severe vasoconstriction, followed by rapid vasodilation. Blood flow to the skin’s surface and extremities is redirected to insulate vital organs and maintain core temperature. These responses are due to perceived life-threatening conditions; therefore the body is forced to activate a cascade of powerful adaptive (survival) mechanisms involving the body’s most crucial systems.  Cryotherapy immediately improves blood circulation, ensuring adequate delivery of oxygen and nutrients to bodily tissues, while improving the body’s natural ability to eliminate toxins.

 

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING A WBC SESSION:

The technician will take your blood pressure and provide you with socks, gloves, and slippers.  You disrobe (males wear cotton underwear, females nothing at all or cotton underwear and sports bra), then stand in the open air chamber from the neck down.  You experience 2-3 minutes of extremely cold, dry air that is very invigorating.  It is not painful and is much more tolerable than icing or an ice bath/cold plunge.  Most clients experience an immediate impact within a few minutes of exiting the chamber.  These responses are due to the increased blood flow back to the peripheral tissues and the almost immediate endorphin rush.  Some clients do not experience an immediate result, but do so the next morning after they have mixed in a night's sleep.
